SOMEBODY’S LYING | CHAPTER NINE: MUTUAL INFIDELITY
For a long moment,
Darius and Imani just stared at each other —
breathing hard,
eyes red,
hearts bruised.
Then out of nowhere…
Darius laughed.
Not a soft laugh.
A broken, exhausted,
“my life is ridiculous” laugh.
He bent over the dresser, shaking.
Imani wiped her face.
“Why… why are you laughing?”
He tried to talk through it.
“Just thinking…
about EVERYTHING I’ve been through today.”
She sniffed.
Then — surprisingly —
she laughed too.
A small one at first.
Then bigger.
Then both of them were laughing
like two people who finally hit rock-bottom
and found only madness left.
They slid down to the floor, wheezing.
Imani wiped her eyes.
“I can’t believe that idiot
actually answered my phone…”
Darius shook his head.
“Meanwhile Kross just got out of jail.
He upstairs, feet on my couch,
eating my snacks…”
They kept laughing.
She leaned into him.
“Baby…
I’m sorry.
For the lies.
For all the bullshit.”
He nodded.
“Girl… wait till I tell you
what kind of DRAMA I been dealing with.”
She sat up.
“I wanna hear everything.”
Darius stretched his neck.
“Alright but listen:
I’m hungover,
been running through closets,
almost fought somebody’s husband,
slept God knows where,
and almost killed a pastor—”
She gasped.
“WHAT?!”
“And that pastor had a whole lover
turns out the dude was—”
Imani held her head.
“Darius, what the hell is your life?!”
He threw his hands up.
“Plus I got a damn speeding ticket.”
They both started laughing again.
Loud.
Hard.
Messy.
Meanwhile…
OUTSIDE THE HOUSE
Officer Nolan sat in his patrol car
thinking about Imani’s voice earlier,
thinking something felt wrong.
He turned around.
Came back to the house.
Pulled into the driveway
and saw Darius’s car parked CROOKED,
headlights still on.
His eyes narrowed.
He went around the back.
He heard barking.
He saw the back door cracked open
like someone forced it.
His hand went for his gun.
He stepped inside slow.
Floorboards creaking under him.
House too quiet.
Except—
Soft sounds.
Voices.
Sighing.
Breathing.
To Nolan,
it sounded like someone was crying.
He crept down the hall
toward the bedroom.
BACK IN THE ROOM
Darius was mid-story, laughing so hard
he could barely breathe.
Imani slapped his shoulder.
“Darius, STOP —
you’re killing me!”
He held his stomach.
“I swear it happened EXACTLY like that—”
Then—
THE DOOR BURST OPEN.
Nolan stormed in, gun raised.
“DON’T MOVE!”
Imani screamed.
Darius froze.
“Wait—
YOU?!
You the damn cop that stopped me!”
Imani scrambled off the floor.
“Nolan —
Nolan STOP!
Please!
Everything’s cool!”
Nolan kept the gun up.
“Imani, I got this.
I know you tired of this clown!”
Darius stood up slowly, eyes burning.
“Man…
get the hell OUT my house.”
Nolan aimed the gun higher.
“I SAID FREEZE.”
Imani screamed:
“PLEASE!”
Darius’s hand moved to his waistband—
the place he kept his piece.
“Don’t do that,” Nolan growled.
Imani sobbed:
“Darius, PLEASE don’t—”
Visions flashed through Darius’s mind:
Nolan with Imani,
in his bed,
in his house.
Smoking cigarettes.
Answering his phone.
He snapped.
Darius lunged.
Nolan grabbed him.
Imani screaming.
Bodies wrestling.
Gun twisting between them.
Then—
POW.
A single gunshot.
The room went silent.
Darius blinked.
Nolan froze.
Imani covered her mouth.
TO BE CONTINUED…

Yeah, 10/10.
The music? I say 12/10.
After reading this, the strongest feeling isn’t shock, but a quiet sense of “this really went too far.”
The laughter hits harder than anger—it feels like what happens when everything finally collapses.
The pace is fast, the tension sticks, and even knowing something bad is coming, it’s hard to stop reading.
Well done my brother !🥃
