SOMEBODY’S LYING | CHAPTER FOURTEEN: OUT THE CLOSET
Back at Maya’s house,
everyone was still trying to get off the floor—
hearts racing,
ears ringing,
reality finally catching up.
Darnell rubbed his chest.
“Julian…
you straight?”
Julian shook his head, confused.
“Man—
what the hell just happened?”
Darnell exhaled hard.
“I’ll tell you what happened.
She almost got us killed in this room.”
Maya slammed the door shut behind her.
“You got some nerve.
Almost got YOU killed?
You sneaking in and out of hotels with him—
you think I don’t know what that costs me?”
Julian frowned.
“What you mean by that?”
Maya crossed her arms.
“Figure it out.”
Julian scoffed.
“Oh, she don’t know me like that.
I’ll lose my mind right now.”
Maya stepped forward.
“Try it.”
Darnell jumped between them.
“HEY.
Everybody calm the hell down!”
Julian pulled back.
“We’ll talk later.”
Maya shook her head.
“This whole situation sad.”
Darnell sighed.
“It is what it is.
But we need to talk—
try to understand each other.”
“Understand THIS?” Maya snapped.
“I doubt it.”
They kept arguing—
voices overlapping—
while a phone on the counter rang.
And rang.
And rang.
Nobody answered.
Darnell raised his voice.
“Enough!
All three of us in one house—
do you know how that looks?”
Maya laughed cold.
“A wife and a businessman looks fine.”
Then she looked straight at Julian.
“But you and him?
You really want me answering questions?”
Julian snapped.
“I got a right to love whoever I want!”
Maya fired back.
“Not in MY house.
Whoever you choosing belongs outside.”
Darnell cut in.
“Nobody’s leaving.
Not until we sort this out.”
Maya and Julian locked eyes—
pure tension.
Then the phone rang again.
This time, Maya picked it up.
“Hello—
Darnell residence.”
A familiar voice rushed through.
“Maya… it’s Imani.
Can you talk?”
Maya sighed.
“I’m in the middle of something.”
“Girl, this can’t wait.
Please—
get somewhere private.”
Maya turned away.
“Okay.
Talk fast.”
Imani’s voice trembled.
“Remember the police officer you introduced me to?”
Maya froze.
“…Yeah.”
“Well—
everything went left.
BAD.”
Julian glanced at Darnell.
“What the hell?”
Darnell whispered.
“I don’t know.”
Maya snapped.
“I’m on the phone.”
“Go ahead,” she said.
Imani rushed.
“It started at this club last night.
Me and Nolan were in VIP—
laughing, drinking—
everything cool.”
“Mmhmm.”
“Next thing I know,
Darius walks in with some woman—
wig crooked, attitude loud.”
Maya’s eyes dropped to the wig on the floor.
“…What club was this?”
Imani paused.
“Velour.”
Maya sat down hard.
“Imani…”
“Wait—
I’m not finished.”
Imani kept going—
about Nolan’s wife,
about the little man,
about the guns,
about the baby.
Maya tried to interrupt.
“Imani—listen—”
But Imani kept talking.
Darnell snapped.
“Maya, are we finishing this conversation or not?”
“I’m on the PHONE!”
“I don’t give a damn.”
Maya turned away.
“Imani—
stop talking and listen to ME.”
Imani quieted.
“You remember that woman you saw with Darius?”
“…Yeah.”
Maya swallowed.
“Well…”
“WHAT?”
Maya closed her eyes.
“Imani…
I’m sorry.”
“Sorry for what?”
“That woman…”
Imani waited.
Maya whispered:
“That was me.”
Silence.
Dead silence.
